2008 Ktm 530 Exc R Review

Hi Folks. I just bought an 08 EXC R 530 yesterday with 9k in miles. Bike is flipping awesome......... when I can get it started! It's been a while since I've owned a carbureted moto and first for a kick start.
Worked yesterday fine but today, no go. Seems really finicky. Used the electric start but it would not fire. choke or no choke. Brand new battery winds down fast too. Tried the kickstart and no go again! Now a new to me bike sits on the side of the road with no steering lock.
Also, the kickstand mount sheared after first ride and to show it to a buddy. Right behind where the kickstand meets the bike. looks like its not an insert but a molded substantial part. Really bummed but not discouraged!
Any ideas and lessons would help immensely!

I always ask this with hard starting thumpers.
When were the valves last checked?

Good question. I'll find out! The previous owner a friend and coworker. I do know the bike sat for over a year without starting it up.

I know on the RFS powered EXCs hard starting almost
always meant tight exhaust valves or loose intakes.

Ya, he never mentioned ever having them done. Said he's always checked and I was given some tools and shims in a kit.
I have found the sweet spot in starting with both the kick start and electric start but now I have to keep it running. While riding it yesterday it kept cutting off on me. So if be on the side of the freeway, bridge or street giving a couple kicks and it would start right up but go a mile or two and it was like it was choking itself out and die, ha ha ha. This thing is cracking me up, ha ha ha!
Already purchased a new kickstand as I've already broke the OEM one and some brush guards as this one doesn't have any. Next its fold away mirrors and engine stuff to make this thing more reliable. Again, any and all input is desired as I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Thanks!

Think it was the fuel filter. Cleaned out and running great! Starting to be hard to get back to heavy bikes

Was wrong there too. Turns out it was my gas cap vent not allowing venting to take place. Periodically I open, close it then ride it some more! No problems since so I have to get a cap and vent or just the vent.

Ahh. Fuel starved. Never thought of that.

Does your bike still have all the smog stuff on it? Mine acted very similar until I removed all that crap, installed the Blais jet kit and cut the baffle out of the exhaust. Now it can breathe. Starts easy and runs much stronger!

It was already removed from the bike when i bought it. I guess there a gas cap recall but didn't include my VIN for the same reasons.
